Im not that familiar with shepards pie but this was bland to my taste. This was so much tastier than expected. Made it pretty much as written but used red wine, chicken stock, Worcestershire, mushrooms, leftover carrots and leftover roast leg of lamb. Did use peas and I would not recommend leaving them out unless you detest peas. Made a mash of white potatoes and sweet potato with butter no milk for the topping. Hubby went for seconds. DyIIPJJN' alt='Shepherds Pie With Corn' title='Shepherds Pie With Corn' />Might be enough for lunch tomorrow but this serves 4 at the most. Had left over eye of round roast beef and some bacon. Followed this recipe with saute of onions, carrots and chopped bacon but did not add 12 inch cubed roast beef to mixture until saute almost done. Continued with the rest of recipe as written but also added red wine and worcestershire sauce as one reviewer suggested. Another reviewer mentioned letting the meat mixture cool which was a good tip. It turned out delicious and was a great way to use leftovers. Will definitely make again. I tripled base recipe for 6 adults, and to have leftovers. Didnt want to waste the can of tomato paste, so used the whole thing. Yes, could have used more herbs I didnt read the reviews first and salt. I drained off cooking liquid, drained the fat, and put liquid back in addition to stock. I dont use dairy with meat, so just put in olive oil and chicken stock in potatoes. The leftovers were gone the next day. I love shepherds lamb and cottage beef pie. A couple of thoughts. HP or bovrilmarmite, red wine, extra stock lamb stock can be overpowering, so I tend to swap in chicken stock in a shepherds pie. This is especially true if your freeze the pie I tend to batch cook 2 or 3 at the same time which breaks the texture of potato on a reheat. How Many Tablespoons Per Cup. Traditionalists will weep but tasty. Im suspicious of the suggested peas though Excellent base recipe like many reviewers I added spices cinnamon, allspice, upped the herbs, and deglazed with red wine, then used less butter in the potatoes. My main complaint is serving size 6 people I would be embarrassed to put this on the table in front of 6 people. I would say 4 tops, we were 3 and finished it off, and I am sure my partner would have wanted some more. Looked over the reviews and made the following revisions which resulted in an extremely tasty meal Used 1 pound of ground beef rather than lamb. Boiled alcohol off 1 cup of red wine. Added a 1 cup of beef broth and further reduced red winebroth to a total volume of 1 cup. Prepared a roux by melting 1 T of butter, adding 1 T of flour, and cooking until the roux was golden brown in color. Added two cloves of garlic to the saute. Added 14 t cayenne and several dashes worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture. After simmering the meat mixture for 1. Topped the meat mixture with grated sharp English cheddar cheese. Ladled on potatoes and topped with further grated cheese. Wow Its going to sound like I made a lot of changes. I added celery and removed peas I put green beans plus mushrooms on the side. Per suggestions, I added garlic salt while meat was sauting. Then added A1 with broth. It still seemed flat so I added just a scoche of Siracha Im looking for a 1. I love this recipe. The rosemary adds such a wonderful note. I scoffed at Shepherds Pie for so many years. This is my husbands most requested recipe. Its perfect weeknight comfort food, and you can estimate quantities on literally everything and it will still turn out great. Its easily adaptable, but I dont tend to make a lot of changes. Sometimes I add garlic or use Yukon Gold potatoes, and salting the lamb and vegetable mixture as you go is a given. I usually have to broil for the last five minutes in order to get a nicely browned crust. This was SO good. I did a few things differently that really made the dish Id say. Used 9. 3 ground turkey. Before going straight to the carrots, onions, and meat, I decided to chop up two thick slices of applewood smoked bacon until nice and crispy. Chopped up one large clove of garlic. Added it in right before bacon was just crispy enough. Then I went and added the meat first to soak up the bacon juice nom and then the carrots and onions. Oh, and I used 12 of an onion just cause my boyfriend is not really a fan. Will DEFINITELY make this again. Ive made this recipe several times. It is best when I go very heavy on the herbs and add cinnamon, like other reviewers have mentioned. I will make it again and again Thanks TWINXABC for the mention of HP sauce and what was in it. I actually bought some to try in this recipe and I thought it gave it great flavor. I chopped the vegetables medium coarse for texture, and added a couple of celery stalks and a poblano pepper, as well as 5 cloves of chopped garlic, and I used replaced the ground lamb entirely with ground beef because I didnt want to have to drain any fat off the pan. My use of celery and the poblano pepper was probably due to the fact that I was using beef instead of lamb. I might use different vegetables with lamb, and I would probably have used some cinnamon in that case, as another poster mentioned. Oh yes, and I used a lot more herbs than the recipe called for, adding some marjoram to the mix just because I like it. All in all, very tasty, and Im looking forward to leftovers. If I make this with all beef again I think Ill add mushrooms. I have never found an as written recipe for Shepherds or Cottage Pie that wasnt blander than bland thats why I came here because I knew all yall would have good ideas on how to perk it up. If I may I threw in some HP sauce instead of Worcestershire and cinnamon. With the molasses, dates and tamarind extract already in that brew, I thought that was what this recipe might be looking for turned out greatI made a few additions after reading some of the other comments. I added Rosemary, thyme, minced fresh garlic, cinnamon and molasses. About a teaspoon of each, give or take. I also added another 12 cup of broth in addition to the cup I used and and other dollop of tomato paste. Delicious With the additions it was absolutely fabulous and flavorfulMade as is with one small addition a spoonful of Ardbeg scotch for a slight smoky flavor. Needed more. something. Have had shepherds pie in Irish pubs and theres always a rich, brownish sauce accompanying the meat portion. This lacks much of a sauce, and could use more seasonings as many have previously indicated. As a base recipe its fine but with all the recommendations for adjustments, you cant call this a winner for the novice who is trying the recipe for the first time. Made this for dinner, but changed it up a little bit. Instead of just carrots and peas, I added frozen mixed veggies corn, carrots, peas, and green beans. I also added garlic, Worcestershire, and a little bit of ground cumin and topped the potatoes off with some cheddar cheese. Turned out delicious and I cant wait to make it again. Doubled it for our family of 6 and made it as written. This is great comfort food, perfect for a cold winter night. Even the pickier eaters had seconds. This recipe turned out fantastic, though I added 1 12 cups of chopped mushrooms as a filler for the meat filling as I didnt really have enough beef. For the potatoes I added a bit of cream cheese and Parmesan also sprinkled the Parmesan on top of the potatoes before I put it in the oven, and I added paprika, cayenne pepper for some spice, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, a bit of sage and thyme, a dash of nutmeg, and 2 chopped cloves of garlic. The meat was a bit bland at first but the added spices and the flavour of the mushrooms made it delicious. Seeing other comments, next time I make this I will try adding allspice and cinnamon as well and maybe a bit less Worcestershire sauce to balance out the extra flavours, but it tasted greatShepherds Pie VI Recipe Allrecipes.
